Langsdorffii, "vampiro de Plants" That Extracts Nutrients from Other Plants

It seems that the blooming of Langsdorffia will be accompanied by the death of other plants in the area. Even so, the other impacts of this plant on the surrounding ecosystem have not been clearly revealed. This is because Langsdorffia is extremely rare and is only found in remote locations and when it blooms in dry conditions.


The good news is, this "vampire plant" is known to be harmless to humans.


Dr. Chris Thorogood, Departamento de Ciencias Vegetales de from, Jardín Botánico de la Universidad de Oxford, hopes that this parasitic plant can be included in local plant collections to better understand its ecology.


"Langsdorffia, like other parasitic plants, is underrepresented in botanical garden collections. It should be a candidate for further research and a conservation focus", say Thorogood and colleague Jean Carlos Santos in Plantas, Gente.


Langsdorffia, also known as the "vampire plant", lives in the forests and savanna of Central America, South America, Madagascar, and Papua New Guinea. They produce bright red flowers to mark their location.


It is a lack of chlorophyll that produces the blood-red flowers - making them look like they are coming from the depths of the ocean, not from the forest floor.

Reporting from IFL Science, the four different Langsdorffia species currently known are holoparasitic plants. That is, they do not photosynthesize on their own.


Instead, they use their suckers - like underground tentacles - to extract nutrients from the roots of other plant species. In other words, Langsdorffia only relied on their host to survive.
