This Penguin Species Can Survive Amid Extreme Ice Melting

A recent study provides good news amid Antarctic warming. One species, the adélie penguin, is known to survive well in the middle of summer without ice.

Published in the journal Science Advances, the study revealed that by swimming — and not walking — they spend less energy when searching for food. This makes the adult penguin well developed and their babies can survive.

We know that Antarctica has been hit hard by climate change in recent years. An unprecedented high temperature lasted nine days in Antarctica last February. The temperature reaches more than 20 ° C.

These high temperatures produce a landscape without ice which is bad news for some endemic species such as the emperor penguins, as well as coastal communities that are threatened by the danger of rising sea levels.

However, there is one species that can survive in a landscape without ice like that. It is known that adelie penguins thrive without ice. Their behavior was recorded in the mating season in areas without ice from 2016 to 2017. The results were then compared when they mated in an area full of ice.

Adélie penguins usually walk across the ice to access the waters before hunting their prey. During swimming, they depend on ice in the sea to take a breath.

With the ice disappearing, penguins can immediately switch to swimming mode and breathe freely whenever they want without relying on ice sheets. This provides greater and easier access to krill-filled food spots (crustaceans such as shrimp). Adult penguins are also noted to be fatter - illustrating the positive impact of drastic changes.

The researchers note that their findings appear to contradict previous studies which state that adelie penguins will not survive well in warmer climates.

The researchers stressed that the study looked at correlations in the past, while the study they conducted only compared results from four mating seasons - including those in regions without ice. That way, this latest study draws conclusions from experimental comparisons.
